All five PhD-positions are part of the same overarching « Dutch Swimways » project. The overarching aim of this project is to investigate the function of theWadden Sea for fish, and come up with management recommendations for fish in the Wadden Sea.

PhD projects 1 and 2 look at the function of salt-marches and subtidal reefs for fish and will be placed at the Marine Ecology lab. at RUG/GELIFES.

PhD project 3 deal with quantifying pelagic fish in the Wadden Sea and will be placed at Wageningen Marine Research.

PhD project 4 deal with tracking fish migration and habitat selection in the Wadden Sea and will be at the Royal Netherlands Institute for Sea Research (NIOZ).

PhD project 5 deal with fish survival and growth in the Wadden Sea and will also be at the Royal Netherlands Institute for Sea Research (NIOZ).

The School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences (SoMAS) at Stony Brook University invites applications for a tenure track faculty position in fisheries ecology to begin as early as Fall 2020. We are particularly interested in candidates who have a strong potential to collaborate with other faculty and staff across disciplines within SoMAS. The search will consider applicants in fisheries ecology including candidates with backgrounds in quantitative analyses, community ecology, population dynamics, ecosystems, climate change, large-scale fisheries issues and other related areas. Successful candidates are expected to develop an independent, externally funded vigorous research program, to teach and direct research at both the undergraduate and graduate levels, and participate in school and university service. The position will be filled at the Assistant or Associate Professor level.  Review of applications will begin December 31, 2019, but applications will be considered until the position is filled.

Anticipated start date is September 1, 2020.

Qualifications

Required:  All candidates must have a Ph.D. (or foreign equivalent) in hand no later than August 31, 2020 in fisheries ecology, marine sciences or a related discipline, and have demonstrated excellence in research and a strong commitment to teaching.  Demonstrated excellence in research related to fisheries ecology or related topics, and a compelling agenda for future research, is expected.

Preferred:  Experience in teaching undergraduate or graduate courses in fisheries ecology or closely related topics.  Experience with course and curriculum development.  Experience mentoring undergraduate and/or graduate students.

Experience obtaining and managing external research funding. Experience and interest in working in multi-disciplinary or trans-disciplinary environments.  Potential for collaboration within the School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences to advance its research mission.

Dr. Jim Garvey‘s Lab in the Center for Fisheries, Aquaculture, and Aquatic Sciences (CFAAS) and the School of Biological Sciences at Southern Illinois University is seeking candidates for two PhD positions. One PhD student will explore the ecosystem-level impacts of broadly distributed aquatic invasive species, using the current bigheaded carp invasion in North American rivers as their primary study system. The other PhD student will participate in a new project linking responses of native and invasive freshwater organisms and their ecosystems to atmospheric carbon dioxide enrichment, while helping assemble a multidisciplinary team of researchers. Both students are expected to develop projects that complement ongoing collaborative research at multiple experimental and geographic scales.

Qualifications: Intent to pursue a professional position in research or academia, with a strong interest in basic and applied ecology. A completed MSc in biology, ecology, or related fields is required. Prior experience in quantitative ecology, field research, writing, and science communication is desirable. Strong collaborative, interdisciplinary, and interpersonal skills are necessary.

About the program: The CFAAS (https://fisheries.siu.edu/) is a 70-year-old externally funded research center in proximity to the Shawnee National Forest and the confluence of the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers, with 90 research ponds, an experimental lake, the Saluki research aquarium, and considerable field sampling assets to meet students’ research needs.
