2014_10: Postdoctoral Ecopath-Ecospace Modeling for Fisheries Management

The research group on Fisheries Ecology, Management and Economy at University Federal of Rio Grande do Norte (UFRN) in Brazil has an available postdoctoral associate position for immediate start as part of a 2-­‐‑year broader collaborative effort between researchers from the le Institute de Recherche pour le Developpement (IRD, France – Marta Coll), Ecopath International Initiative (EII, Spain – Jeroen Steenbeek) and Brazilian researchers, funded by CAPES (Brazil). We are looking for a fishery ecologist interested in the fields of fisheries management, fisheries economy and ecology, including modeling with the Ecopath with Ecosim (EwE) food web model, with a special focus on both EwE software development and applying new programming routines for EwE to interface with hydrodynamic software.
The selected fellow will be responsible also for independently elaborating EwE – Ecospace models on Brazilian aquatic ecosystems and discussions with PhD and Master’s degree students. The position requires supervision of undergraduate and
graduate students who will support meta-analyses for Ecopath models and perform software development associated with the project. It is also essential that the candidate shows the ability to independently design and carry out research projects.
He/she will also work conjointly with the researches coordinating the proposal in writing papers. Accordingly, this position will require data compilation and synthesis that will be incorporated into manuscripts to be written and submitted for publication
as well as conference presentations.
Qualifications: Ph.D. in Ecology, Fisheries, Economy, Natural Resource’s Management (or similar areas) is required. Experience in Ecopath-Ecospace models and programming are essential.

Terms of the Appointment
Monthly salary is R$ 4,100 (annual R$ 49,200 in Brazilian currency – Real -­‐‑ R$), following CNPq payscale for a Junior Post-doc Grant (« Bolsa de Pós-Doutorado Júnior – PDJ »). Funds are available for two years, and renewable for additional years
pending satisfactory progress.
Location: Natal, Northeastern Brazil in Rio Grande do Norte (State)
From October 2014 until September 2016 (maximum).
